My husband age 66 has pancreatitis disagnos 3 yrs ago and now his sugar level is 206 and his memory is gone when it is this high. He does take 10mg of glipizide twice a day and 1000mg of metformin twice a day plus pancrelipase 15,000 2 capsules 3 times a day plus many other medications. I am very worried about his memory, the doctos say he is fine, but he does not remember these blackouts. I see it at home everyday. What can I do? He also does not want to eat solid foods.
Hello, did he have diabetes before pancreatitis? What was the cause of his pancreatitis? Pancreatitis may destroy the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. If this is the cause of his diabetes then perhaps he should discuss about insulin treatment with his doctor. In any case, his blood glucose cannot justify such symptoms. If you believe that his memory is deteriorating then you had better take him to a neurologist with an interest in dementia. The neurologist will be able to tell him (and you) if he has a real problem or not. Does he have diarrhea when he eats fatty foods? Why does he avoid solid foods? Does he eat in a healthy way? Is he overweight? Diabetes treatment is more effective when the patient conforms to a healthy diet and keeps his body weight close to normal.
