Suggest Treatment For Knee Pain

Hi I am a 27 year old 5 8 142lbs, very athletic, active & healthy. I have had Type 1 diabetes for 6yrs. but it has been managed well & I have no negative sideeffects. I was hit by a motorcycle at low speed 1 month ago, full force of the wheel went to the outside of my left knee. It hurt a bit but went away after a few minutes so I thought nothing of it. After a few days, I ran & noticed my knee was locking so had it checked up & an x-ray showed I had a lesion on my cartilage. until this point I could still do things normally, only found it slightly painful when lifting heavy objects. I stayed off it for about a week then went back to playing basketball & exercising normally. later I banged it while biking & since then I have been experiencing pain while climbing stairs etc. now it hurts all the time but especially when my knee bends to about a 45 deg. angle (that s if it s at 180deg. when it s straight) . An ultrasound showed my tendons are all ok. I am a us citizen in Brazil & do not yet have insurance or access to medical benefits yet & very little money to see a specialist, I got the xray n ultrasound done at a free govt hospital but it is a lengthy process. I did some research about lesions in the knee cartilage & some of the options. My question is... How do you recommend I treat my knee until I am able to get further help & proper treatment??? Please help as I do not want to injure it further. Thank you!

Hi,

I suggest you to regularly place some ice packs on your knee, and occasional NSAID's to treat the swelling and the pain. Nevertheless, you have high chances of needing surgery to solve this problem, specially because you are a 27 year old man with a knee cartilage defect.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Gonzalo Escobar, Orthopedic Surgeon
