For four years my outer lips of pubic area is so itchy, and now bumpy! I went to the dr last year she said the skin was thick and prescribed me some ointment to wash with and some steroid cream nothing has worked. It s driving me mad and keeping me awake at night. I ve shaved down there for over 14yrs so I no it s not that. I haven t changed any washing powder etc. the itching gets worse when I m due on my period or I get hot, and when the hair down there is too long. I wear cotton underwear too. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from itchy, bumpy vaginal area. You are suggested to take care of your hygiene. You get more itchy when the area is warm, it can be fungal infection, ring worm. Do not touch, pop or scratch. Take a course of antifungal, fluconazole orally for relief. Apply ointment clotrimazole or Lotrimin ultra on the affected area.

Fungal infections spread in warm, moist (sweaty) conditions. Keep the area affected clean, dry and wash the area frequently. Avoid sex for a couple of days. Do not use harsh chemical lotions, detergents as they may trigger the symptoms. Stay away from addictions if any. Stay well hydrated. However, get STD tests done to stay on the safer side. If reports come positive, you will be treated with antibiotics / antivirals.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
