Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For Headache During Bowel Movements
I am having severe head pain during bowel movements. It is not a migrane and I don't strain. I have IBS and most of my bowel movements are soft. The pain is so severe I am afraid I could die on the toliet. If feels like a blood vessels could be exploding. Usually the pain will subside within an hour, but this last time the pain has stayed in the left side of my head. When I tell my doctor he brushes me off like I am crazy.
Can you cause the headache if you bear down like you're trying to have a bowel movement but not actually having one? This creates a high pressure in the body which can affect blood vessels in the brain if they are weak. I would not simply brush this off. Your concern about a blood vessel exploding might be closer to the truth than you realize. If your doctor is not willing to pursue it, talk to a neurologist or neurosurgeon. It might be a good idea to get a brain MRI/MRA and see if there are any abnormal vessels in your brain that could be leaking slightly when you have a bowel movement or in other situations where the pressure in your body increases. Hope this helps.
