hi, my 17 year old daughter had mono this summer. She recovered but is still fatigued. She is now complaing that her spleen hurts, it s swollen and it hurts when she laughs or moves in certain ways. She also has a headache, , says her lymph nodes in her neck are slightly swollen and a bit of a sore throat.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

She may mean that there is pain on the left side of her abdomen but this may not necessarily be related to the spleen because the spleen is not a common source of pain.

Pain on the left side of the abdomen can be related to the skin, nerves in the area, muscles underlying the skin, bowel etc.

Based on the symptoms of headache, sore throat and swelling of the lymph nodes (assuming those in the neck), she may have an early viral illness such as the common cold or flu.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
