Suggest Treatment For Excessive Weight Gain

I am 62 year old female in relatively good shape (I exercise 3-4 days a week), but have gained 20 lbs over the last year. Lately I can only eat small meals or am extremely bloated. Also, very thirsty when this happens. I am a water drinker anyway, but this feels extreme and just adds to the discomfort.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I wanted to know if you have recently been tested for diabetes because it is often related to excessive thirst. I would recommend you to do a fasting glucose levels, postprandial glucose levels and HbA1c. Also, check your thyroid levels because hyperthyroidism often causes weight gain. The treatment of this issues can improve your weight gain.

If everything comes normally you can just adjust your diet eating three meals a day and two snacks between them. Also keep a balanced diet. Visiting a dietitian is always a good idea.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka,
