Suggest Treatment For Distended Urinary Bladder And Bladder Pain

I am an 82 year old male. I have a distended urinary bladder with mild posterior protrusion of uncertain etiology for which a diverticulum is difficult to exclude. I am post TURP and Post Green Light surgery. I have difficulty urinating - post void residual average 230-250 ml. also nocturia, frequency and some bladder pain. What therapy would help me?

Hello,

To treat distended urinary bladder the cause have to be detected. It can be due to loss of the tone of the bladder muscles, obstruction in the urinary tract, enlarged prostrate, infections, nerve problems, urethral stricture, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a Urologist, get blood tests and imaging tests done. Get diagnosed.

Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. You may be treated with medications, a catheter can be used to drain urine. If neurological causes, implantable devices can be used to stimulate the nerves and muscles of bladder to contract and relax when the need arises. Neuro-modulation therapy is a pelvic physiotherapy but it is still under research & effectiveness is not known yet. If needed your treating doctor can suggest surgery.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
