Suggest Treatment For Depression

My husband, Age 31 years suffered from depression from last 4 yrs and initially put on paxidep 12.5 by the doctor and gradually been told to increase the dose to 25 but he didn't do that and continuosly taken paxidep 12.5 for 2 yrs and then tapered it off with homeopathic medicine taken for 6 months, but couldn't got much relief and again went to allopathic doctor and started nexito plus with him. now from last few episodes when he felt irritated from certain family comments or some misunderstandings, his behaviour has turned very aggressive and he has started tearing his clothes and breaking glass furniture of his house and slapping himself.please suggest what can be done. eagerly waiting

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello Thanks for asking

He was having depression and was started on paroxetine 12.5 mg controlled release which helped a little but ultimately he didn't visit doctor and continued to take same doses for 2 years and then left medicines. The symptoms relapsed because of lack of medicines. Now he is on Nexito or Escitalopram and currently showing symptoms like anger outbursts, irritability, aggression, slapping himself etc. These symptoms can occur due to depression itself. Irritability can be seen in depression but other symptoms like anger outbursts, breaking things should not be overlooked. He might be having some bipolar symptoms of mania which are causing anger outbursts and other symptoms.

I would advise you to consult his psychiatrist again for re-evaluation and to rule out bipolar disorder. Some time manic switch is seen in patients of derision with drugs. Mood stabilisers like Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine, Lamotrigine can decrease aggression and will decrease his anger.

Thanks, hope this helps you
