Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, My name is Susanne. I have a son with long term depression. He is 35 and has been on medication for 10 yrs. He has had a bad year with things going wrong and I have seen him go down in his moods and ability to work and look after his home. I have talked with him and I think his medication might not be working. He is booked to see a psychologist on Monday, but I think we need to get him to see someone to change his meds as I have seen him like this before and his meds were raised and he was like a real happy person again. We live in this washing machine with a big agitator pulling us this way and that. I have heard him talking of "better for everyone if I just bump myself off". The cost financially for myself and my sons grand parents is huge as we finance his mortgage and his living expenses. He is single man (he has said that he will never have children as he cannot look after himself) and he is on leave without pay now and looking at losing his job. We just seem to run around like headless chooks looking for help. I feel so useless...
I went through your details. I can understand your emotions. Depressed people are also clueless as you are. The treatment with medicines work well but they also need to be motivated. For them, they are always self-demotivated. Depression is such a mental disorder. Recent research shows that psychotherapy, meditation and exercise alongwith medicine hold the key for cure. He needs to be motivated first. For that motivation, all family members should change their attitude towards him and start motivating him. Once he gets continuous motivation, chances for his change raises to 90%. Then go for the other treatment options.
