Hi there, I have a bulging Disc on my l4 l5 which is pressing on my l5 nerve I have the most pain in my calf 10/10 I have to apply ice to it all day just to be able to sit at work and not cry, my doctor has me on main meds and seems to think its not a big deal ( category 2 potential for emergency but not emergency ) since my cat scan the pain has become worse for a day or two I couldn t get out of bed I have never had this before. now io have noticed I have not made a bowel movement in 5 days . I am very worried things have gotten worse but my GP is relying on my CT scan from a month ago which I think something has happened to make things worse since then .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bulging disc causing spinal nerve compression may cause radiating pain over the back of thigh and legs. Depends on the degree of compression of the nerve, management started. Mild compression of the nerve may be relieved with physiotherapy and analgesics. Moderate to severe compression of the spinal nerve may need surgery to correct the cause for compression along with physiotherapy.

Constipation is not a feature due to L5 spinal nerve compression. The cause for constipation may very from bowel obstruction to tumour in and around the spinal cord. Dehydration may also cause constipation. It should be evaluated and treated. Since the pain is severe, try physiotherapy to relieve the nerve compression and oral analgesics such as ibuprofen, aspirin for pain relief. Sometimes corticosteroids are advised to cure swelling of the nerves.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
