Suggest Treatment For Bruising At Back Of The Legs

Hi there, I have a BIG bruise on the back of my leg behind and up from the knee. I do not recall hitting myself there, but it s possible that lifting boxes or something the other day that I could have. I was moving boxes around and do not remember hurting myself. It s looking pretty ugly. There is a bump/lump when I go to touch it, but it doesn t hurt. Something to worry about?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bruising is common with even mild injury. But severe pain, swelling or bleeding from bruises should be treated immediately. Any small fractures or severe soft tissue swelling should be ruled out by taking an X-ray. In case of normal bone study, pain killers and hot compress can provide early pain relief.

Complete blood count, bleeding time, clotting and prothrombin time should also be evaluated to rule out any bleeding disorders.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
