Suggest Treatment For Blurred Vision, Numbness In Hands And Headaches

Hello, My father has been experiencing some strange symptoms occasionally. He says that if he doesn t eat for several hours he starts getting blurry vision, his hands become numb as well as his legs around the knee area. He completely loses his peripheral vision and he develops a moderate to severe headache that begins at the base of his skull and gradually moves to his entire head. He says that if he catches the symptoms early and gets something healthier to eat it can help the symptoms to subside as quickly as 20 minutes. Otherwise if he has to wait to eat it can take an hour or more to relieve these symptoms. He is 47 years old, and is a commercial over the road truck driver. He has not been diagnosed with Diabetes or anything like that nor has he been checked for that or high blood pressure etc. We are just wondering if this could be an issue of vitamin deficiencies or something more serious?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your father is very young but the symptoms he is suffering from are indicative of developing Peripheral Neuropathy.

Your father needs a complete medical check up, clinical examination by a GP followed by Blood tests, Nerve Conduction tests, Nerve Biopsy & Imaging tests (CT, X-Ray, MRI, EEG).

Nerve weakness or damage to the nerves commonly causes numbness, temporary loss of vision is indicative of Optic Neuropathy, when the optic nerve gets weak or damaged.

Other medical conditions that cause numbness of legs or knee are Arthritis, Radiculitis, Diabetic Neuropathy, Nerve compression syndrome, acute injury to the knee cap, injuries/fracture, etc.

These will be detected with a complete medical check-up. His treatment will depend on the severity of the pathology detected. He can take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) & vitamin B6, B12, folic acid supplements for relieve.

Give him home made nutritious food, help him stay well hydrated(give him ORS, soups, juice, water). Moderate walking & adequate rest are effective. Avoid addictions if any.

Stay connected with your treating doctor & health care provider. Get treated at the earliest. Neglect will cause worsening of the symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
