General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

*do you have a family history of diabetes?
*do you have any other medical issues or take any medications?
*what is you height and weight?
*do you smoke or consume alcohol?
*how old are you?

I recommend :
- blood tests (HbA1c, fasting and post prandial). If any of these are abdnormal a Glucose tolerance test should be done. In addition to this, lipid profile, Thyroid stimulating hormone, kidney and liver function tests must be done.
-urine analysis
-electrocardiogram and echocardiogram if indicated
-chest x-ray.

At home:
- avoid refined grains and processed foods. Stick to whole grains and fresh homemade food.
-minimize oil consumption to half a liter per month per person. Use good oils like canola, gingerly and coconut oil.
-avoid fried and oily food.
-include lot of natural fiber such as whole fruits and vegetables.
-has smaller but frequent meals (every three hrs). Snacks such as sprouts, nuts, seeds are good.
-eat your food slowly and chew well before swallowing.
-avoid sugar.
-exercise regularly after consulting your doctor
-avoid cereal bars and energy drinks

If the tests results are abnormal and to high, you may need medications in addition to lifestyle modifications.

Based on the above a treatment plan will be made.
Do not try and starve or avoid food..
If the surgery is urgent, insulin can be used to control sugar prior to surgery.
Else surgery should wait till sugar and other parameters are normal to have an uneventful procedure and recovery.

Hope this. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
