Hello Kanika,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:
1. Montair LC is usually considered safe for long term use. Common side effects are sedation and
stomach upset. So if you are not experiencing any of such side effects, I would suggest you could continue it for long duration.
2. Most of the medications for allergies &
asthma can only "control" symptoms but do not "cure" allergies. That's why one has to continue such medications for long time and symptoms may recur upon discontinuation.
However, they are not basically habit forming.
3. For management of allergies, I would suggest you
allergy testing for aero-allergens such as house dust mites, insect
proteins, common indoor molds, common pollens in your region and pet dander (if you have contact with pets) which commonly cause asthma.
This will help you identify the substances causing allergies to you as well as to know the measures to avoid them.
4. Based on allergy testing, an Allergist-Immunologist may prescribe you allergen specific
immunotherapy which works on immune system to gradually improve allergy symptoms over a long duration. Allergen specific immunotherapy is one of the definitive treatments for allergies.
5. I would also suggest you to avoid exposure to dusts, smokes and air pollution in general.
6. Regular breathing exercises like
Yoga & Pranayama and healthy diet rich in vitamins & minerals also will help you to improve lung capacity and immunity over a long period.
7. Regarding you father, in my opinion, regular montelukast+
levocetirizine (Montair LC) may helpful to him also. However, in general, comprehensive treatment of asthma requires investigations like lung capacity measurement and allergy testing.
Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.
Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.
Wish you and your father the best of the health ahead.
Thank you & Regards.
