I am an adult and have had a hole (large) in my eardrum for several years. Cholestatoma removed successfully some years ago. Now all of a sudden, my dr. tells the hole is closed but I have refracted eardrum with fluid behind it. why would the hole close after all these years.

Hi,

Noted the history and understood the concerns.
it is great yo know the Cholesteotoma was removed and there was a large hole in the eardrum that your Doctor has said has been healed.
The eardrum also called as tympanic membrane is composed of three layers if tissues. The outone being in continuity with external canal skin, the inner one is continuity of the inner mucosal lining and the middle one is of a connective tissues and as the name suggests it provides the framework.
Since the whole is large for the size of tympanic membrane it is actually of some mm in size hence can be healed by the body's healing mechanisms.
Although it will not have the middle ear and holds sufficient strength.
It is good and you are lucky that the hole has healed and you do not need surgery.
The build up of fluid inside tympanic membrane that is in middle ear cavity occurs due to transfer of infection or inflammation via Eustachian tube. This can be cleared with three weeks of course of proper prescription based medications.
Also take care not to blow the nose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant,
