Suggest Steroid Ointment For Anal Fissures And Itching

I went to my gyn about irritation occurring in the area between my vagina & anus. This has been going on for 2 yrs. she prescribed a steroid cream, .05 Clobetasol propionate 3 times per week. I was not real good about using it. Recently, the condition got so bad, a fissure developed that became painful. She examined me on Wed. Then prescribed the ointment, same strength every night for 2 weeks. After 3 nights, I am burning. I called the pharmacist. She said I should back off & use Balmex, which I am & the burning has subsided. My question is, would you prescribe a steroid ointment with a fissure present?

Hello,

For anal fissure we would like to recommend trying to keep your bowel movements soft so they are easier to pass stool by eat fiber food or supplement.. Take stool softener if the fiber supplements are not enough. For example, a stool softener is docusate. Your doctor can also prescribe a medicine that relaxes the anal sphincter muscle.

This helps the fissure heal. The most commonly used medicine is nitroglycerin or nifedipine cream. You can also soak your buttocks in 2 or 3 inches of warm water. This can help relieve pain by relaxing sphincter. If those above not help you doctor may give you Botulinum toxin or surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
