Suggest Remedy For Heart Palpitations

I think I had a heart palpitation--my heart was beating harder and faster than I have ever had before for about a good 2 minutes and then it all of a sudden stopped & went back to normal. Now my chest is sore. Should I see a doctor? I am 24, 5'6, 130 lbs. I exercise regularly, eat healthy. Heart problems do run in my family.

Hello,

The fast beating of the heart above the rate of 100 per minute is tachycardia. This can occur normally when one is exercising, has fever or is under stress. Then it is often a condition called sinus tachycardia. What you described is fast heart beating which came on without any cause, lasted a few minutes and stopped as abruptly as it began. This is called Paroxysmal tachycardia. The exact type of it is diagnosed from an EKG during the episode. If this recurs frequently, you might be able to get an EKG during the episode. If it is too short for you to reach a hospital, Holter monitoring can be done which records continuous EKG over a 24 hour period. Once we have the diagnosis proper treatment can be advised.
However the fact it lasts only 2 minutes with no other symptoms and reverts spontaneously makes it probably a benign condition like Paroxysmal Supra Ventricular Tachycardia (PSVT). If it is recurrent you should try to get a tracing and a cardiologist would be able to help you in this matter.
Best wishes,
Dr. Noble Zachariah
