I m concerned about excessive drooling that started with my elderly mother 2 weeks ago. It is causing a bright red irritation along the creases of her mouth. What would be causing this, and is there anything that you would recommend to treat the affected areas around her face?
hi mam/sir,drooling in elderly occurs in the below mentioned conditions: 1)stroke leading to facial palsy 2)dentures. 3)parkinson's disease 4)sinus infection leading to chronic congestion 5)infectious mononucleosis 6)peritonsillar abscess 7)neuromuscular disease causing difficulty in swallowing. treatment can be initiated only after arriving at a specific diagnosis.thorough examination is the key to management.coming to irritation around mouth, the following measures are effective 1)first and foremost is undoubtedly prevention of drooling by accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. 2)saliva is to be completely and immediately wiped off. 3)an emollient cream can be applied at the rash site and a thin layer around the area where saliva drools.(prevent contact with oral cavity.) 4)prevent moisture in that area. hope my answer clarifies your doubts.any other health queries, please let me know.thank you.take care.bye.
