Suggest Medication And Dosage For Diarrhea In A Child

Hello Doctor, I m writing to you from India. My 3.5 year old son is suffering from diarrhoea since last morning... have been giving him ORS and a little milk... hes active otherwise, except that hes getting weaker due to no intake of food... hes epileptic and is on Leveracetam 2.5-2.5 per day. He was diagonized with bilateral hippocampal atrophy when he was 2 yrs old. He suffered his first seizure at 14 months. Can i give him nor metrogyl. If yes, what would be the ideal dosage and for how many days should it continue (given the fact that its an antbiotic)? Many thanks in advance for your advice, doctor...

Hi...this seems like a viral diarrhoea to me. There is no need to use antibiotic unless there is blood in the stools. Actually metrogyl is metronidazole and can cross react with some antiepileptic medications. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.
I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment.
