Why Is Lomotil Prescribed While Suffering From Diarrhea?

I have pancreatic cancer and my doctor has given several drugs to stop my diarrhea One being Lomotil and cholestyramine along with creon. But as of today it still seems to be getting worst. When I looked up the side effect and stated that diarrhea was one. Why would he prescribe medication to stop diarrhea with medication that cause diarrhea.

Hi,

Cholestyramine may indeed cause diarrhea. Flatulence and diarrhea are its most common side effects. It's usually given to patients with obstructive jaundice (like patients with pancreatic cancer) to reduce the problems associated with jaundice. Cholestyramine helps to loose bile salts to the stool (it prevents re-absorption).

I don't know whether other options were considered/employed or not. A stent for example to bypass an obstruction and relieve - at least partially - the jaundice. Lomotil and Creon help to reduce diarrhea. Creon replaces the missing pancreatic enzymes and Lomotil decreases gastrointestinal motility.

Perhaps you can talk to your doctor about the necessity of Cholestyramine and also the dosage of Creon. Sometimes a higher dosage of Creon is required or perhaps a different brand. Your doctor should guide you through that.

Be warned though that diarrhea can be difficult to manage in some cases. Make sure you inform the treating doctor about your progress so that he can modify your treatment plan accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
