Hi, i am Ganga Dhar. My wife is pregnant and is being given Zanocin 400 mg (ofloxacin). Is that safe or is there any other safe alternate to Zanocin which is equally effective? She is suffering from Milliary TB. Other TB medicines are Combunex 300/800mg and Rcin 450mg.

Hi Gangadhar, I have gone through your question. Ofloxacin is a category C drug, which means that adverse effects like cartilage damage are seen in fetus in animal studies , while controlled studies are not done in humans. Few smaller studies in humans have not reported any increased risk in the fetus. Since your wife is having military TB, this a essential drug for her, therefore has to be given the benefits of this drug outweighs the risk associated.
Combunex is isoniazid and Rcin is rifampicin, both are safe in pregnancy.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
