Suffer From Mastoiditis. Feeling Weak And Weak. How Long Will It Take To Recover?

Yes! My sister has had mastoiditis for 3 months including a 15 day stay in the hospital with antibiotics given through an IV. She has been treated for an additional 2 weeks with the same IV's at home. She is showing no signs of improvement and as early as yesterday, was vomiting and is EXTREMELy weak. She is unable to perform even the smallest tasks. She is under the care of an ENT doctor and also a specialist in Knoxville, TN. How long will this continue to last? I am so very concerned about her health!!!!

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. If your sister has mastoiditis for more than 3 months and has not responded to more than 4 weeks of IV antibiotics, is vomiting and weak, you must get an HRCT (High Resolution CT) Scan and MRI Scan with late diffusion sequence.

2. Infection in the bone is extremely difficult to treat as the blood supply of bone is extremely poor. Hence the antibiotics may not reach the site easily.

3. She may require a mastoidectomy. If you can share the scan images I will be able to give you an accurate assessment. I will also require her detailed clinical examination notes as well as the images or description of her eardrums. How is her hearing? Does she have any ear discharge? Do you have any blood test reports and pus culture reports?

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
