Sprained Ankle. Walked Back Home And Having Ankle Injuries. Experiencing Pins And Needles Sensation. Underlying Causes?

Hi. I'm a sportsperson and I've sprained my left ankle several times. Last year I almost broke it but went through 6 weeks of recovery. This year I had sprained it again and was off for two weeks. So I've been wearing ankle braces to support my ankle. Two days so, I rolled my ankle again. It was fine at first butas the day went on, it did start to feel sore. But the next day it was fine because we had a four hour drive. I was back on my feet when I got back home and felt pain in my Achilles (I've had Achilles/ankle injuries in this same foot.) there's no swelling and I did the RICE method and there was absolutely no pain afterwards. The next day(today) I went for a 2KM run and didn't have my ankle brace on. It was fine but I'm starting to feel pins and needles in my left ankle and all the way up to my valve? I just want to know why I'm experiencing this because I've never had this happened to me.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Sensation of pins and needles always suggests a pinched nerve either locally in the foot or remotely in the lumbar spine.

I suggest you to rest the foot with foot end elevation for a few days and see whether your symptoms resolve. If they are still persisting, consult your treating doctor for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Vaibhav Gandhi's  Response
Hello,

I have studied your case with diligence.

It seems that there is some neural injury leading to pins and needle sensation.
Mortons neuralgia can be differential.
Due to repeated ankle injury there is ligament microtear.

I will advise you to do regular physiotherapy and exercises this will help in ligament healing at faster rate.
You may need EMG NCV ,[nerve study].

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care
