Should I Take My Kid To ER Due To Discoloration In Lips And Eczema Rash On Cheeks?

Hi and thank you for your help. My toddler's lips have turned purple over the past two days. He is in no discomfort at all. He has no difficulties breathing. He is his usual happy and playful self, with no loss of appetite. I'm concerned because I have not seen this happen to him before. His lips have been a little chapped and he has an eczema rash on his cheeks. Could there be a reason to take him to the ER or call his doctor?

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.

As you mentioned that his lips have turned purple but otherwise is completely appearing well.

I would suggest that you take him to his doctor even though he is appearing well so as to have a complete physical examination to rule out any heart condition, although the likelihood is low.He needs to have his oxygen saturations checked.

There is a condition called methemoglobinemia which may cause this to happen. There are some medicines esp local anesthetics like baby teething gels that can cause this condition.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
