Should I See An Orthopedic Or Neurosurgeon For Lower Back Pain And Neck Pain With Degenerative Disc Disease?

Orthopedic or neurosurgeon, which is the correct choice. I have been experiencing neck and lower back pain for 10 plus years with a lamonectomy in 2007 that did not help remove the pain. Since then i have been treated from my pain management doctor to control my pain through opiods, and have tryed all areas of non invasive proceedures including the newest type of spinal cord stimulator. All types did not help. As of now the pain in my lower back and hips and left leg has gotten unmanagable. I have been told i need a fusion. My age is 46 years old and my quality of life is terrible. Fusions seem so in dept and from my fathers experience in a l4-l6 fusion the pain never really went away. Also from others i have met the sucess percentage rate does not seem very good. i have been diagnosed with degeneritive disc desease. Most likely i will have surgery but from what i have briefly said here what type of doctor would be best for my cituation? Thank you

Dear Friend.
Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
Both the specialities deals with these problems. If there is a nerve compression , a neurosurgeon can handle it better.
I personally refer my patients to a neurophysician first , they try to manage conservatively as they have experience in that. If not relieved by conservative treatment , i refer them to a neurosurgeon.
It is not actually much important that to whom you are seeing , important is the experience of the doctor you are seeing in such problems.
You may share with me your MRI Report , i would be able to guide you better with that.
This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you want to discuss your issues further, you may please ask us
