Should An Abscess In The Rectal Area Ne Drained?

Hi. Have an abscess in the rectal area. Colo rectal surgeon is reluctant to open up and drain. What might have caused it? I have an ileostomy (operation done 37 years ago) so no rectum or large colon in that area. Should I be pushing him to drain the abscess?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here are my thoughts.
Surely yes, in fact abscess anywhere in the body has to be drained unless suspected to be due to tuberculosis wherein it is aspirated.
You have not mentioned the cause of colectomy. Well since you have undergone proctocolectomy and are on permanent ileostomy for 37 years the cause of an abscess in the rectal area can be local like a boil or so.
Please insist for surgery if it is not yet opened and go for proper further care.
Take proper antibiotic with probiotics and anti-inflammatory medications till cured.
Hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
