Should I Be Concerned For Taking Overdose Of Multivitamin?

Hi, I accidentally doubled up on my multivitamin today. I took a total of 2 today, and each contains 18 mg. iron (as ferrous fumarate). I took one this morning at 8 a.m. with breakfast (eggs oatmeal blueberries) and one on accident with lunch at 1:30 (cauliflower chicken and brown rice). I called poison control, and they said I should be alright, except for some mild diarrhea and possibly vomiting. They suggested I drink some milk, so I did. I ve only had to go once, but I m concerned. Do you think there s any reason to worry, or will I survive (LOL). Thank you for putting my mind at ease. =)

Hi,

Please do not worry. Iron causes constipation more commonly than diarrhea and that too, when taken in higher quantities like 200 mg three times a day, as indicated in anemia. The amount of iron you mentioned is miniscule and would not cause you any trouble. Most vitamins are water soluble and what is in excess of the body's requirement gets excreted easily. Vitamins A, D, E and K are not water soluble but one extra tablet will not cause any toxicity.

Best wishes.
