Should I Be Concerned About Brown Discharge And Fishy Odor In The Open Wound After Fistula Surgery?

On Monday I had an operation to deal with a low fistula-in-ano - the would was laid-open and a seton stitch inserted. The wound has been dressed (packed) daily by nurses on home visits. Once or twice a day I have a bowel movement and afterwards I clean thoroughly by washing with water (from a shower hose), then covering loosely with a surgical pad until I next see a nurse for a professional dressing. However, I am suffering brown discharge and a strong fishy odour in the open wound. Should I be concerned?

Yes you shoud concern about it. You didnt mentioned whether you are taking amtibiotics or not. But after fiystula surgery antibiotics are needed to fight against bacterial infection. There are very high chances that you might be suffering from bacterial infection as wound is likely to be contaminated by fecal material daily. Bacterial infection preaent with foul smeeling discharge and wound gap . So consult your doctor and get culture and sensitivity report of wound discharge done. Third generation cephalosporine might help you..
