Severe Back Pain Moving To Left Hip, Leg, Lower Part, Calf Muscle. No Help From Painkillers. Suggest

first I had severe back pain , then it moved over to the left hip , then down the left leg, seems all the pain is in the muscles, now it has been down the lower part, back of left leg below the calf muscle, I have been to my family Dr, also had back x-rays taken, it is getting better but have not been able to walk up-right for about three weeks now, have been on pain pills but this is not going away, thanks for any suggestions

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your description of symptoms typically suggests the possibility of Lumbar disc disease with radiculopathy which implies that a protruded intervertebral disc in your lumbar spine is causing compression over the nerve root causing you pain down the leg.

The initial management of this problem is always conservative by the following measures -

* avoid lifting heavy weights as it imparts more strain on your back
* avoid forward bending activities as it will worsen the disc protrusion
* Use a lumbosacral back support to augment your spinal muscles
* Intermittent pelvic traction to cause a regression of disc
* Maintain optimum body weight,if you are obese
* Physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles. Physiotherapy has to be done only after the acute pain has subsided.
* Judicious use of analgesics and muscle relaxants.

If all these measures fail to provide you relief, then surgical decompression may be an option.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
