Hello,
My husband had malaria like symptoms when we visited India in July-Aug 2012. since then, he's has 2 repeats of similar symptoms, the latest being a week ago. He has fever that repeats every other day, intermittent nausea, body ache, joint pain and chills. Malarial blood tests have come back negative. What is going on and what can I do?

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern, but there are many other conditions transmitted from a mosquito bite that can present in a similar way, or rather these symptoms are more generalized towards such a presentation. These conditions are seen more often during this time of the year, being the monsoons.

My advise would be the two following things:
1. Test for other conditions like dengue, chikungunya, typhoid, etc.
2. Initiate anti-malarial drugs, as from my experience malaria patients (50 %) of them return a positive result to the laboratory tests conducted to detect malaria. Most patients in such situations experience an improvement almost immediately after initiating a course of anti-malarial's. This condition is called Clinical Malaria.

So, please discuss the above mentioned options, which I am sure will certainly help your husband recover at the earliest.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications at: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-shoaib-khan/64581 . I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
