Recently Suffered Flu. Having Heartburn, Acid Reflux, Pinching Sensation In Heart. Serious?

I am a 53 year old woman (obese) who recently suffered a severe flu . My blood pressure is normal and my cholesterol is as well. For the past two nights, I have experienced bad heartburn to the point of waking up with stomach acid coming up my stomache and into my nose . For the past two weeks, I experience a pinching sensation in my heart once or twice a day but this morning, I experienced this feeling for two hours. Now, it only comes once in a while like it has in the past two weeks. Can I wait to see my family doctor about this or should I go to the hospital?

Hello dear...

The symptoms as mentioned by you suggest that you might be having Gastro esophageal reflux disease, which is caused by the reflux of acid from stomach to esophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Management consists of:
1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc. (which prevent acid formation in stomach) Metoclopramide can also be used but it has some side effects on long term usage

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist.
There is no need to worry...you will be fine.
Wish you a good health & speedy recovery.
Thanks & Take care.
