Reason For The Delay In The Periods?

Hi, my name is Kristin. I have been on the birth control of Junel Fe for approximately 6 months now, and sometimes my period is light or heavy. My boyfriend and I have sex regularly using the pill as the only form of protection, he always pulls out before finishing and I have never had a problem with not receiving my period. However, I was scheduled to receive it between last Sunday throughout this past Saturday. During the week, I believe it was Tuesday I had some brown spotting for a day and a half, but that is about it. I am really nervous and would like to know why this is occurring.

Hi,
I understand that you use oral contraceptive pills regularly since the past 6 months and you had an episode of light spotting.

The menstrual pattern for women on pills depends upon the type of pill. If you are using combined pills that is pills with estrogen and progesterone than the bleeding pattern is almost similar to a normal period. If you are using progesterone only pills or emergency contraceptive pills [only one or two doses within 72 hrs of contact] than bleeding patterns are not predictable. So i suggest you first check the pill that you are using.

Second possibility in your case may be an accidental pregnancy and the bleeding you experienced was implantation bleeding. Get a urine test done if the period has been delayed by more than a week to rule this out.

Another reason could be hormonal imbalances or unruptured luteinised follicle of ovary. Investigations for these are not needed for a single episode as they tend to correct themselves spontaneously most of the times.

If the urine test is negative, repeat it after a week. Meanwhile if you still do not have a period, you will need to see your gynecologist.

Hope I was able to help. Thanks for using Health Care Magic.
I would be happy to answer any further queries.
