Prescribed Darvon To Relax From Rages, Also On Lithium, Celexa For Bipolar. Any Alternative Painkiller ?

I was just prescribed Darvon to help me relax because I have rages. My doctor knew it was a painkiller and thought it might help. I am taking lithium and celexa for bi-polar disorder and depression. I also have Tourette syndrome but that has come down a lot since my younger years. I'm 54 now. The pharmacy said this painkiller's entire family has been eliminated from the market. I need a drug to help my body relax. From what the doctor saw, this was not a opiate drug. But I do need something and an opiate of some kind may be the only option. Can you suggest something?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
hi,
from what i could gather, u were given 'Davron" for rages. also you are presently on lithium carbonate (dose?) and Citalopram (dose?) for bipolar disorder.
Davron contains propoxyphene which is a narcotic analgesic, i.e. it belongs to the opioid class of pain killers. It has abuse potential, and is presently banned because of possible ill effects on heart.
for anger outbursts and rage, there are other less harming methods like psychotherapies which might be explored by you in collaboration with your treating psychiatrist. there are techniques like yoga, biofeedback methods or Jacobson progressive muscle relaxation (JPMR), which are very effective in relaxing your body without exposing you to the harmful effects of medications.

hope this helps.
