Pregnant, Dental Abscess. Given Amoxicillin Tablet. Advice?

I have the start of a dental abscess, I went to the doctor yesterday as I can't get an appointment to see the dentist until next week. The doctor gave me a 5 day course of amoxocillin . This morning I have woken up still in pain and with a numb tingling tounge. Are the two connected? I'm 34 weeks pregnant should I seek further medical advice?

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Pregnancy is a sensitive phase and care should be taken before taking any medications i would suggest you to consult to your OBGYN before taking the medications.
For any dental infection you can take amoxicillin safely.
Avoid exposure to x-rays.
Medications will give temporay relief, Drainage of the abscess is required, the infected tooth structure can be extirpated and temporay filling can be placed, this will subside tooth ache temporarily, further treatment can be done after delivary.

Take care!

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Abscess associated with tooth has to be drained and curetted as soon possible.

If left untreated, pus can drain into sinus spaces too.

Maintain oral hygiene well.

Antibiotics can relieve pain temporarily.
Take care.

elcome in the forum with your problems. Well, "dental abscess" is a misnomer and does not clearly explain a situation. It is better to say that you have a infection from dental pulp tissue and/or the infection spreads into the tissues around your tooth. Your doctor is absolutely correct by prescribing you a course of Amoxicillin to control the infection. Amoxicillin is a very safe drug in any stage of pregnancy. One should give 72 hours or at least 48 hours time to see that the antibiotic medication is working by observing the reduction of symptoms. There is no need of seeking further medical advise at present and I think you will get well soon with this course of Amoxicillin. Good luck.

hi
second trimester (3rd-6th month) of pregnancy is considered most safe for any dental procedure..
in yours case, get your abscess drained and cleaned up by saline and antiseptic solution by dentist... amoxicillin is safe... in case you feel pain, you can have paracetamol as prescribed by your dentist...
if relieved by above procedure, visit your dentist again after delivery for any further procedure required...

Hi
Welcome to HCM
I would suggest you that second trimester is safest for dental procedure.
You need to get abscess drained in that duration.
Amoxicillin is safe in pregnancy but it will relief pain temporarily.
Maintain good oral hygiene by regular brushing & flossing.

Take Care
