hello,
thank you for using health care magic,
VDRL is just a screenig test for syphilis.. its not confirmatory.. it can be false positive many times .. so be relaxed and wait for TPHA test result it is more confirmatory test..
now a days incidence of syphilis is very low and as you said there is no exposure to such disease to you and your wife so its highly possible that vdrl is showing false positive..
if god forbid TPHA comes positive then baby can have many congenital anomaly and its better to terminate pregnancy.. be under supervision of your gynecologist..
Regards,
Dr.Nehal..

Hi Thanks for using HCM.

VDRL positive suggests syphilis.
In pregnancy infection has widespread complications for both the infected woman and fetus. Maternal syphilis has been associated with obstetric complications such as hydramnios, abortion, and preterm delivery; fetal complications such as fetal syphilis, hydrops, prematurity, fetal distress, and stillbirth; and neonatal complications such as congenital syphilis, neonatal death, and late sequelae.

But 2.4 million units of benzathine penicillin G can be given for maternal infection and to prevent transmission to baby. But results are uncertain. So discuss with your doctor now, get the scan of baby to know whether affected and then for the further management.

Wish you and your family a good health. Take care
Regards
Dr.Lohit

Hi,
The fetus of mother with VDRL +ve Have chance of getting opthlmic or bacterial infection. &this can be prevented/controlled by early diagnosis with timely &compleate treatment.
TPHa test is done for anather sexually transmitted disease which is comparitively grave in pregnancy. Still, again a timely &propertreatment may be applied by an expert Gynac & a Dermatilogist.
Treatment will be needed by both sex partners, cosidering a safe &healthy married life.
Pl. dont worry, be +ve and consult a specialist for optimistic results.
Thank you.
