Peeling Inside Cheek, Changing Toothpaste Did Not Help. Could Acid In Drinks Eat The Skin?

Hi, my husband has a lot of peeling on the inside of his cheeks.
We've tried swapping toothpaste, but that doesn't seem to be the cause as far as we can tell.
He's never been one to chew on his cheeks, and it's not relegated to being worse in the morning so I'm assuming he's not chewing on them at night either.
My uneducated theory is that it may be caused by his excessive Mountain Dew soda drinking.
Could the acid in the drink be eating at his skin in there?
I'm at a loss here, and sick of seeing him dig his fingernail in his mouth to remove the "bits."
Yuck!
