Pain In Buttocks When Sleeping Or Sitting After Fall. Fracture?

I lost my footing and fell while standing on a sidewalk. I fell basically in a sitting position. I was sore later but didn t feel I hurt myself; more of embarrassed. That his been a couple of weeks. Now I am having pain from that area while sleeping or sitting. Do you think I could have some sort of fracture? I am 62yrs old.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description, A fracture is unlikely in your case because any fracture will present with pain immediately after injury and not after few weeks (as in your case).

I suspect a Soft tissue contusion either in the form of gluteal strain or a soft tissue hematoma causing you pain.

The general treatment guidelines are as follows -

* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities produces pain (try to lie in a lateral position while sleeping)
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Lean forward while sitting down
* Sit on a doughnut-shaped pillow or wedge (V-shaped) cushion
*Physical therapy involving strengthening of pelvic area muscles , stimulation with ultrasound therapy
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve as needed

If you dont find any pain relief with the above measures, then an MRI scan of the involved area is necessary to detect any soft tissue pathology.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
