On Mirena, Had A Very Light Periods. Have Cramps, Headaches, Sore Nipples. Pregnancy Test Negative. Can I Still Be Pregnant?

Hi,

I have been on the Mirena iud since April 2010 and have always had a normal menstrual cycle. My last cycle was in April, but it was very light and was only for about 1-2 days. I missed my cycle last month, but have been having menstrual cramps, headaches, sore and painful nipples, pains in my lower left abdomen and back pains for 3-4 weeks now. I took a pregnancy test about a week and a half ago, but it showed negative. Can I still be pregnant?

Hi,
Thanks for your question.
Most of the women who use Mirena develop scanty or even absent menstruation. This is a known effect of this hormone releasing device. It is a very effective method of contraception. So, if the device is inside chances of pregnancy are very remote. Your other symptoms may represent the side effects of the hormone released by this device but still need evaluation. You did a good thing by doing a home pregnancy test but I suggest you to have one trans-vaginal scan as well. This will rule out other pelvic pathologies & any ectopic pregnancy.
Wish you good health.
