Old Aged, Dying From A Hemorrhagic Stroke, Mouth Is Drooping, Breathing Strong. Is There Anything That Can Be Done?

my 80 year old health active friend in in the hospital now. dying from a hemorrhagic stroke . the left side of her mouth is drooping and her rt hand was in a loose claw position. She is not on any life support. her breathing was strong her bp 140/68. They said there is no hope for her. She in unconscious but she looked good other than that. can you explain why they can t drill a hole to release pressure on the brain or is there anything else they can do. the family has given up hope.

Dear patient,

Thanks for your query and sorry about the tragedy. The problem is usually not the pressure build up, but the amount of time that the brain tissue is deprived from oxygen and therefore dying; 4 minutes of cutting off the circulation to an area of the brain can be sufficient for the cells in that region to die... Sometimes, however, if the bleeding increases there can be herniation of brain structures.

Probably at this moment, conservative measures and adhereing to your best knowledge of her wishes in life (in such a situation) is the best course of action.

Yours truly,
