MRI Shows Herniated Disc Pressing Sciatic Nerve. Taking Muscle Relaxers And Gabapentin. Is There Anything To Ease Up The Pressure On The Nerve?

I had MRI in April this year and results found herniated disc L4-5 pressing on sciatic nerve root. Been treating with pain meds, muscle relaxers and gabapentin, but this week pain has been excruciating enough to send me to ER. Not sleeping obviously or I wouldn't be online at 2:45 A. I'm eating modest meals so pain meds don't bind me up and also using miralax once a day for regular bm's. However, I seem to have trapped gas that is making pain even worse. Is there anything I can do to ease up on the gas as I feel this must be a full bowel adding more pressure on the nerve?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There is no connection or relationship between distended bowels or abdominal gas on the nerve root irritation or compression.

You can use a proton pump inhibitor or an antacid gel to take care of your abdominal gas.

If your pain is so severe and is not respoding to medications, an Epidural steroid injection into the lumbar spine will provide good symptomatic relief.

Consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
