Leg Pain, Knee Pain, Bulging Disc, Nerve Sleeve Injection Taken. Is It Due To Physical Exertion?

I have been having reffered pains down the side of my legs from my knees downwards due to a bulging disc touching a nerve. About 3 weeks ago I had a nerve sleeve injection and 2 days later another injection in my spine. I got immediate relief from the referred pain. Now for the past few days the pains are starting to reoccur. Should I have been doing some exercises? I have been doing some slow walking while shopping only.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From your description, it is evident that you have LUMBAR DISC DISEASE with RADICULOPATHY with classical presentation.

Infact, the initial management for Lumbar disc disease is as follows -

* Avoid lifting heavy weights to prevent additional strain over the spinal column
* Avoid forward bending activities to prevent worsening of disc bulge
* Use a lumbosacral back support
* Intermittent pelvic traction to cause regression of a contained disc
* Maintain optimum body weight,if you are obese
* Physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles. Physiotherapy has to be done only after the acute pain has subsided.
* Judicious use of analgesics and muscle relaxants.

These measures should give optimum pain relief.

As you have already tried nerve root injections without any significant relief in symptoms, you may need a surgical decompression.

Consult your treating doctor and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
