Knee Having Purple Blotches On Vein, Painful While Bending Leg. Is This Serious Or A Kinked Nerve?

The back of my husbands left knee has a purple vein-ish blotch on it and he seems to be in quite a bit of pain when he tries to straighten or bend he leg too much. Is this serious or just a kinked nerve or something. This started today and no real action that caused the pain, one minute he was fine the next minute it hurt.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
It can be knee synovitis or some cartilage damage in knee. I would recommend you to apply ice and take Brufen table for pain relief. If his pain increases then he should get x ray of knee joint to make sure that there is no reduction in knee gap. Also He should avoid squatting and sitting on floor .
