Is Uterus Removal Safe When Suffering From Severe Anemia?

Hello Doctor, I was diagnosed with severe anemia 6.8, secondary to menorrhagia due to fibroid. I was given 2 units of blood which raised the hb level to 8.7. I have also been diagnosed with hypo thyroid. Acc to the gyne, i need to have my uterus removed Asap. I would like to know if this needs to be done on an asap basis or it can be delayed and if yes for how long? Thank you Doctor. Warm Regards: Mrs Sonie

Hi there,
Your fibroids are causing a considerable problem. It would have been good if you had mentioned any treatment for hypothyroidism, as untreated hypothyroidism itself is a cause of menorrhagia. If you are not taking any treatment then prompt treatment of hypothyroidism will significantly reduce the menorrhagia and very urgent removal of fibroids could be delayed to a safer and convenient date. Ultimately surgery is the last resort for fibroids. Meanwhile you should start/comply with thyroxine, and do TSH and Free T4 to ascertain your thyroid status, and start iron supplements.
