Is traces of protein in urine a cause for concern?

Hi Doctor, I was asked to undergo a blood, urine test & the result of urine test says traces of protein, it doesn't quantify the amount though. Is this result a more serious one? what does it mean, to say traces of protein in urine? What are the components that have to be seen along with this result? what could be the possible reasons for this? what are the steps that i need to take to control this?

Hi,

Protein in urine might be due to the presence of a kidney abnormality. A urine microalbumin test is a test to detect very small levels of a blood protein (albumin) in your urine. A microalbumin test is used to detect early signs of kidney damage in people who have a risk of kidney disease.

Results of the microalbumin test are measured as milligrams (mg) of protein leakage over 24 hours. Usually the values might be any one of the following
1. Less than 30 mg is normal
2. Thirty to 300 mg indicates early kidney disease (microalbuminuria)
3. More than 300 mg indicates more advanced kidney disease (macroalbuminuria)

The abnormal results must be discussed with your doctor considering the possibilities like
Blood in your urine (hematuria)
Certain medications
Fever
Recent vigorous exercise
Urinary tract infection
Other kidney diseases
