Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

You have not given any information in your description about the severity of damage either to the spinal cord or to the nerve roots. Because the prognosis (chances of recovery) of the condition depends on the extent of injury either to the spinal cord or the nerve roots, apart from the fractures of D12 & L1 vertebra.

In "incomplete" spinal cord injury, the prognosis is better, with chances of recovery for both sensory and motor deficits. But the process of recovery in spinal injuries is very slow and it may take even upto 9-12 months to regain normalcy. Whereas in "complete" spinal cord injury, the outcomes are poor with permanent loss of motor power in the involved extremities.

In the mean time, it is very important to prevent soft tissue contractures in the joints by passively moving them regularly. Also, it is customary to change the body position once in 2 hours and also keeping soft padding under the bony prominences to prevent pressure sore (Bed sore) formation. A water bed will be very useful for spinal injury patients. Care of the bowel and bladder also plays a vital part and helps in preventing infections.

Follow all the above measures and hope for the best. Good luck
