Is There A Drug Other Than SSRI That You Would Recommend For Bipolar 2 ?
Hi, I am pretty sure I have Bipolar 2. I have taken different SSRI drugs and they made me worse. Is there a drug that you would recommend for bipolar 2? I am a little apprehensive about taking meds with all the different side effects, so one that has few side effects would be great.
Yes, apart from Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), there are other drugs that can be used. Mood stabilizers are the first line of treatment for bipolar disorders. Among antidepressants, bupropion is used for treatment of depressive symptoms in bipolar disorders.
HI, THANKS FOR USING HEALTHCARE MAGIC. SSRI DRUGS ARE NOT THE DRUG OF CHOICE FOR TREATING BIPOLAR 2 DEPRESSION. YOU WILL BE BENEFITED WITH SOME MOOD STABILIZER SUCH AS LITHIUM, LAMOTRIGINE ETC ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH SSRI'S. OTHER OPTIONS ARE PROPER PSYCHOTHERAPY ALONG WITH MEDICATIONS. I WANT TO KNOW WHETHER A PSYCHIATRIST DIAGNOSED YOU OF HAVING BIPOLAR 2? IT IS BETTER TO VISIT A PSYCHIATRIST AND FOLLOW HIS ADVISE. I AM SURE THAT YOU WILL BE BENEFITED. ALL THE BEST. THANK YOU.
Yes, there are drugs other than SSRI for treatment of bipolar II disorder. Mood stabilizers are helpful to improve the depressive symptoms. Apart from mood stabilizers, bupropion is used for the treatment of depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder
Depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder are treated with the help of mood stabilizers, which are the first line of treatment. Also, bupropion is used for the treatment of depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder. You need to consult a psychiatrist for the confirmation of diagnosis and starting the treatment.
Yes there are medicines for Bipolar 2.Actually SSRI is not only the medicines to be given for Bipolar disorder.SSRI should be given with mood stabilizer medicines.
Considering you are more in depressive phase you have been given SSRI, I recommend lithium or lamotrigine for you.
Lithium is well tolerated if given under supervision. However regular thyroid check up and renal function should be evaluated.
Lamotrigine has no serious side effects except skin rashes , rate of that is 0.1 -1 %. Otherwise even better than lithium.
Another medicines are valproate and carbamazepine or zyprasidone. But in your case they should be used only when lithium or lamotrigine can not be used.
So ask your treating doctor about these medicines and go for them.
All the best and wish you good health. regards, Dr. Chintan Solanki
