Is There A Direct Correlation Between Avascular Necrosis And Exposure To Agent Orange?
Doctor: I am a County Veterans Service Officer and am currently working with a Vietnam Veteran who was exposed to Agent Orange (dioxin) while in Vietnam. He has avascular necrosis of both hips and knees. He has had a total knee replacement (bilaterally) and his left hip was also replaced. His question to me and me to you is this: Is there a direct correlation between avascular necrosis and exposure to Agent Orange? Your answer is greatly appreciated. Vern
Respected Sir, Avascular Necrosis also called ischemic necrosis, occurs due to reduced blood supply to the bones.Dioxin which is an active ingredient of Agent Orange is responsible for reducing the blood supply to long bones nd this in turn can lead to avascular Necrosis.Apart from this, heavy smoking, heavy drinking and steroids can also lead to this condition. I hope this information will be helpful to you. Regards, Dr.Radhika
