Is Surgery Necessary For Umbilical Hernia Causing Abdominal Pains?

7 wks ago I had a partial colectomy {left and right side} prior to this my surgeon said I had an umbilical hernia and he said would repair it during the surgery. When I asked him about it at my follow up he said he didn't repair it, it wasn't bad. I think he forgot. I have some swelling around the upper left side of my navel and random sharp pains just below that area when I bend just right or cough. Am I going to have to have yet another surgery to repair this now ? Had my gallbladder out Nov. 2009 and nothing was said about it.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Management of umbilical hernia depends upon the symptoms and size of the underlying defect. If small hernia, not much symptomatic, can be kept under observation. If large, more painful, surgery is mandatory.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
