Is Smoking While Being On Marvelon Harmful?

Hi, I have the nexplanon implant and was put on marvelon for three months initially as I kept bleeding. Once off of marvelon I started bleeding again and advice from the FPC is to have the implant removed. I go on holiday next week so the FPC have given me another load of Marvelon for relief whilst I am away. Although this time I asked the impact of smoking occasionally. Perhaps 10 over an occasional weekend. I was told that I shouldn t be on it if I smoke. But she still gave it to me. I have now researched it and am really worrying. I am 24 and otherwise young fit and healthy. Please advise.

Hi,

Smoking can induce the enzymes involved in the metabolism of hormonal drugs and thus they are used up before they complete their function and might result in contraceptive failure.

So it is always better not to smoke while on Marvelon.
