Is It Safe To Take Azithral To Control ESR Levels?

My daughter had paratyphoid last month and recovered normally. She has thalassemia minor. We visited the haemotologist who asked us to do an esr test. The esr levels showed up at 80 two weeks ago. Our pediatrician asked us to wait and watch. She then started school last week and caught a cold/cough. When we repeated the esr test two days ago, it showed up at 103. Our doc said it could be due to respiratory infection and suggested azithral. Please advise if you think we are missing something as the esr is unusually high.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

ESR (Erythrocyte sedimentation rate) is a marker of underlying inflammation process due to bacterial, viral infection or other inflammation in the various body systems. As the Azithromycin is prescribed in terms of Azithral, it is going to take care of bacterial infection component of respiratory infection. ESR settles down over a period of time once the acute inflammation stage flare up will revert back.

Many times, it takes a bit more time after the subsidence of fever and other systemic manifestations. A sound clinician always rely upon the clinical progress of the patient rather than numbers on report which are not 100 % predictive of recovery or disease process in many situations. So do not panic and get adhered to the current therapy prescribed and be remain in regular follow up with your primary care for best results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
